Start your weekend trip by taking in the colourful and famous street Las Ramblas, which bisects the city centre and is always buzzing with life. Next, wander around the enchanting Gaudí-designed La Sagrada Familia, known for its sinuous curves, dizzying vaulted ceiling and proud spires. Wind your way through the labyrinthine streets of the Gothic Quarter, stopping at the La Boqueria market for Catalan tapas, such as melt-in-the-mouth patatas bravas, and squid from the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean. From there, it's not far to your second Gaudí pilgrimage stop: the beautiful Casa Batlló (or 'House of Bones'). Pass 'go' and land at the cultural heavyweights that are Fundació Joan Miró and Museu Picasso art galleries. The latter's collection of formative works by one of the world's best-known masters is unmissable. Stroll along the beach before seeking shade under the palms at the Botanical Gardens. Cap your city break off by taking in the views from the 17th-century Montjuïc Castle complex, overlooking the city.
