On the banks of the Danube, enjoy a weekend break in the unassuming yet beautiful city of Bratislava. Start at the central Old Town, which is mainly pedestrianised and quite compact. Stroll lazily along the avenues and enjoy stunning river views and quaint shops. If you see only one visitor attraction, make it Bratislava Castle. It's a tapestry of time with its prehistoric site having given way to a Slavic castle in the ninth century. Climbing down from the hilltop fortress by evening, you won't have to go far to discover Bratislava's buzzing nightlife. Bars and clubs abound in and around the Old Town, but if you're feeling brave, why not hop on the 31 bus to the Mlynska Dolina neighbourhood and enjoy the student hub of drinking holes? If you're well past your student days but not too old to pretend to be an astronaut, top off your city break atop the posh UFO restaurant with superb views at the end of the New Bridge in town.
