Laid along the swiftly-flowing Darc and Isère Rivers, Grenoble makes for a rejuvenating city break with its Mont Blanc views, outdoor cafes and eclectic nightlife. Home to multicultural students and foreign scientists, this melting pot of cultures is (surprisingly!) one of Europe's flattest cities, perfect for cycling! Art fiends can catch works by Picasso, Warhol and Matisse at the Musée de Grenoble. For prehistoric artefacts from the Isère region, stop by Musée De L'Ancien Eveche on Place Notre Dame. In the vicinity is the main cathedral. Consider taking the cable car (téléphérique in French) up to La Bastille fortress where sweeping city views await. With three mountains in close range, hiking is a popular pastime for those on weekend breaks – hiking maps can be picked at Maison de la Montagne. Alpine dishes such as raclette, fondue and sumpteous tartiflette are a must while in Grenoble. And while here, why not make new friends with an evening at the ever popular Couche Tard, Bukana and London Pub.
