Located on the iconic Route 66, Amarillo is a real Texan city – anywhere that has a Hall of Fame dedicated to the American Quarter Horse could only be located in Texas, after all! One of the highlights of every weekend trip to Amarillo, stunning Palo Duro Canyon, is actually located just outside of the city, and well worth the short journey. The canyon runs for 60 miles below cliffs that reach 800 feet in height. You can go exploring on foot, by bike, on a horse's back, or take a breathtaking helicopter flight over the canyon to really appreciate the scenery. Back in town, make sure to stop in at Bill's Backyard Classics, a museum dedicated to vintage cars, or head to the Amarillo Dragway to see more modern vehicles in action. Speaking of cars: The famous Cadillac Ranch is a must see, as well. End your getaway with a trip to one of the many rodeo events, which take place throughout the year – entertainment doesn't get more Texan than that!
