Great Smokies, Tennessee, USA

Starry nights and strenuous hikes

If you’re looking for a weekend in the wilderness to reconnect with Mother Nature, look no further. The adventure begins at Asheville Regional Airport. Hop in a nice rental – a Jeep Cherokee if you want to be extra – and get ready for a scenic 1,5 hour drive through the Western North Carolina Mountains. In Cherokee, go dip into American history at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian then try the local specialty that is fry bread. 10 miles further, the picturesque little houses and log cabins in Bryson City will make you feel like you stepped back in time. Trekking gear is a must, as you’ll find the magnificent Great Smoky Mountain National Park with 850 miles of hiking trails and unpaved roads right at your doorstep. Also, it's a good starting place to tackle the Appalachian Trail! Expect waterfalls and cascades everywhere you look and maybe even a wild turkey, woodchuck, or raccoon crossing your path before you reach the observation tower at Clingman’s Dome for a breathtaking view. Adrenaline junkies can also go whitewater rafting or trout fishing. When the sun starts to set, make your way to the Blue Ridge Parkway. In fall, the leaves change colors, leaving miles of landscape in all shades of gold and red, and in spring, when everything is in bloom, you’ll never want to smell anything but those trees and flowers again. As your weekend getaway to the Smokies comes to an end, retreat to one of the rustic restaurant for a hefty beef dip. Make sure to look up to the stars in the night sky – chances are you’ve never seen this many!
