These 101 Thanksgiving Pictionary words are sorted by theme, and I’ve split them into easy, medium, and hard. That way there’s something for everyone: the kids, grandparents, and cousins.

I've run this game after Thanksgiving dinner for a few years now, and I cut every word that nobody could sketch in a minute (sorry, "gratitude"). You'll also get quick rules, a funny round for adults, and printable cards.

TL;DR

  1. 101 words across food, history, fall and family traditions, plus a funny word round
  2. Three difficulty levels scoring 1, 2, or 3 points, so kids and adults compete fairly
  3. One-minute timer, no letters, no numbers, no talking
  4. Free printable cards
  5. Pictionary on your TV with Sketchy AF on the Weekend app, where the TV draws and you guess

How to play Thanksgiving Pictionary

Pictionary is Robert Angel's 1985 drawing game, owned by Mattel since 2001, and the original box shipped with a 1-minute hourglass. I usually keep that limit. Longer turns can turn into a drag once people are full and sluggish.

  1. Split into 2 to 4 teams: Team size doesn't matter. With an odd number, 1 person draws for both sides.
  2. Set a 60-second timer on a phone: For kids under 8, allow 2 minutes. Junior Pictionary's official rules let younger players flip the timer a second time.
  3. Pick a drawer and a card: The drawer gets about 5 seconds to read the word before the clock starts.
  4. Score by difficulty: Easy words earn 1 point, medium 2, hard 3. Kids draw easy cards, adults draw hard ones, and the scores stay close.
  5. Call an All Play every 5th card: One drawer from each team sketches the same word at the same time, and the first team to guess takes the points. This rule comes straight from the board game, and it's the most fun part of the night.

Pictionary dos and don'ts

✅ Draw dashes to show how many words are in a phrase ❌ Letters, numbers, and drawing an ear for “sounds like” are banned
✅ Give each drawer one free pass per round (my house rule) ❌ Talking, mouthing, or gesturing means the turn ends
✅ Break long words into syllables ❌ Pointing at items in the room like the turkey also doesn’t count

If you catch your guests starting to act out the words, you can suggest a game of charades next to put those acting skills to use. These charades prompts swap straight in when people want to act instead of draw, and can make for a good second game.

Three ways to switch up the game

  1. Relay Pictionary: Teams stand across the room from a host holding the cards. One player runs up, reads a word, sprints back, and draws it. Once their team guesses, the next player runs. The first team through 10 cards wins.
  2. Eyes-closed round: The drawer keeps their eyes shut for the whole minute. It's an adults-only favorite, and "cornucopia" drawn blind is hard to top.
  3. One-line relay: Each teammate gets 10 seconds to add a single line before handing over the marker, and nobody talks until the drawing's done.

Thanksgiving Pictionary words by theme

Each block below answers the "what words go with Thanksgiving" question with words you can sketch in under a minute. I've tested every hard word at least once with adults.

Food words

Easy (1 pt) Medium (2 pts) Hard (3 pts)
Turkey Mashed potatoes Wishbone
Pie Cranberry sauce Leftovers
Corn Gravy boat Basting
Apple Stuffing Turkey fryer
Pumpkin Sweet potato Pie crust
Carrot Green bean casserole Second helping
Bread roll Drumstick ㅤ
Fork Whipped cream ㅤ

Drawing tip: Sketch a plate first. It tells guessers they're looking at food, and it saves 10 seconds on "gravy boat" before someone yells "ship."

History and Pilgrims words

Easy (1 pt) Medium (2 pts) Hard (3 pts)
Ship Mayflower Voyage
Hat Pilgrim Seasick
Buckle Plymouth Rock Colony
Rock Anchor Peace treaty
Deer Compass Abraham Lincoln
Canoe Thatched roof Three-day feast
Fish Musket ㅤ
House Bonnet ㅤ

"Deer" and "three-day feast" are on the list because the 1621 harvest feast at Plymouth lasted 3 days, and Wampanoag guests brought 5 deer, per Smithsonian historians.

Fall and harvest words

Easy (1 pt) Medium (2 pts) Hard (3 pts)
Leaf Scarecrow Corn maze
Acorn Hayride Apple picking
Tree Leaf pile Geese flying south
Rake Harvest moon First frost
Squirrel Cornucopia Daylight saving time
Owl Gourd Harvest
Sweater Wheelbarrow ㅤ
Boots Sunflower ㅤ

Drawing tip: "Daylight saving time" is topical in 2026 because clocks fall back on November 1, 3.5 weeks before Thanksgiving. Draw a clock with a backward arrow and a yawning face.

Family tradition words

Easy (1 pt) Medium (2 pts) Hard (3 pts)
Football Parade float Black Friday
TV Marching band Friendsgiving
Couch Touchdown Traffic jam
Balloon Nap Airport line
Pillow Dishwasher Group photo
Hug Kids' table Saying grace
Plate Place card ㅤ
Candle Road trip ㅤ

"Parade float" and "marching band" fit 2026 well, since November 26 is the 100th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The football words suit families who watch the Detroit Lions, the team that’s hosted a Thanksgiving game almost every year since 1934.

For bigger crowds, the scoring and All Play rules go up to 20 or 30 people, and these family reunion games use the same team format.

Thanksgiving Pictionary for kids

Kids under 8 play best with the easy cards only and a few rule changes.

  1. Swap the roles for kids under 6: An adult draws, and the kids guess. Preschoolers love yelling "TURKEY!" at a half-finished drawing, and they never have to wait for their turn.
  2. Drop the timer for first-time players: Add it back once they've guessed 3 or 4 words.
  3. Read the card aloud for kids who can't read yet: Whisper it to the drawer, out of earshot of the other team.
  4. Start with animals and food: Turkey, deer, fish, owl, squirrel, pie, and apple get the fastest guesses from kids.

For a mixed-age table, pair each child with an adult teammate. The adult can help with the drawing, and the child makes the guess.

Funny Thanksgiving Pictionary words for adults

Save these more challenging Pictionary words for when you want some laughs and don’t have little kids playing. Each word/phrase scores 3 points, and I let the guessing team award a bonus point if the drawing made someone cry with laughter.

Funny round (3 pts each) ㅤ
Stretchy pants Pie for breakfast
Food coma Dishwasher Tetris
Turkey on fire Midnight leftover sandwich
Still-frozen turkey Awkward family photo
Dog steals the drumstick Fire extinguisher
Uncle asleep in the recliner Group chat meltdown
Burnt rolls ㅤ

"Dishwasher Tetris" is the best card on this list. Every adult has done it, and the drawings get competitive fast.

Free printable Thanksgiving Pictionary cards

Our free printable PDF has all 101 Thanksgiving Pictionary words as cut-out cards. The top band on each card shows the level: easy, medium, hard, and funny.

  • Paper: Print on 65 lb cardstock so the words don't show through the back
  • Cutting: A paper trimmer gets through all the words in about 10 minutes; scissors take closer to 30 minutes
  • Setup: Keep a separate pile per level and explain each level so a 5-year-old gains confidence by knowing which stack to choose from

Kids can cut the cards themselves on Thanksgiving morning, which pairs well with these other Thanksgiving activities at home while the turkey's in the oven.

Too full to draw? Play from the couch

Once the food coma kicks in and nobody wants to stand and draw, put the game on the TV instead. These games on the Weekend app keep the guessing going while everyone stays in the living room.

Sketchy AF

Sketchy AF is Pictionary with the roles flipped, because the TV does the drawing. A mystery doodle appears stroke by stroke, and up to 4 players shout their answers into their paired phones with hold-to-talk before the sketch is finished.

Earlier guesses score more points, so expect someone to call "turkey" at the first curved line.

I like it for mixed-age groups because nobody needs to draw well to win. My 70-year-old aunt beat 3 teenagers on a round of animals.

Guess the Emoji

Guess the Emoji is best for fast and fun visual puzzle lovers. Each round shows a string of emojis, and you decode it into a movie, song, saying, or pop culture reference, like 🦃🏃 for "turkey trot."

Every category has an easy mode and a hard mode, so kids and grandparents can play the same game, much like these other games for grandparents and grandchildren.

Guess the Emoji is on the Weekend app for Roku, Fire TV, LG and Samsung smart TVs, and Weekend's 7-day free trial covers the full game lineup.
